DJ-BTMU U.S. Business Barometer increased 0.3%
For the week ending January 24, 2009, the DJ-BTMU U.S. Business Barometer increased +0.3 percent as once again wild swings in motor vehicle production skewed the data. Looking at January on the whole, economic activity continued to decline, yet the rate of that decline lessened compared to the prior two months. This suggests that the U.S. business cycle has yet to reach a trough, but the slower rate of decline since peaking in November 2008 means we are getting closer. As the business barometer is in a sense a weekly measure of GDP, we will continue to watch it closely for further signs that the decline in U.S. economic activity is continuing to slow.
