Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims decrease 2,000 to 184,000

In the week ending April 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 184,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 185,000 to 186,000. The 4-week moving average was 177,250, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 500 from 172,250 to 172,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.0 percent for the week ending April 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 9 was 1,417,000, a decrease of 58,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 1,475,000. This is the lowest level for insured unemployment since February 21, 1970 when it was 1,412,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,481,750, a decrease of 31,250 from the previous week's revised average. This is the lowest level for this average since March 21, 1970 when it was 1,456,750. The previous week's average was revised up by 1,500 from 1,511,500 to 1,513,000.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 196,897 in the week ending April 16, a decrease of 27,235 (or -12.2 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 24,800 (or -11.1 percent) from the previous week. There were 583,397 initial claims in the comparable week in 2021.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent during the week ending April 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,475,585, a decrease of 95,550 (or -6.1 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 35,406 (or -2.3 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,828,584.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending April 2 was 1,622,094, a decrease of 88,031 from the previous week. There were 17,394,057 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2021.
During the week ending April 2, Extended Benefits were available in the following state: New Jersey.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 536 in the week ending April 9, an increase of 14 from the prior week. There were 463 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 68 from the preceding week.
There were 8,322 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending April 2, a decrease of 1,135 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,256, a decrease of 279 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 2 were in New Jersey (2.3), California (2.2), Alaska (2.0), Minnesota (2.0), Illinois (1.7), Massachusetts (1.7), New York (1.7), Rhode Island (1.7), Pennsylvania (1.5), and the Virgin Islands (1.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 9 were in Missouri (+7,194), Michigan (+5,950), California (+3,215), Indiana (+3,193), and Texas (+2,617), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-3,886), Wisconsin (-1,159), Oklahoma (-776), Utah (-270), and Hawaii (-219).
