Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims increase 6,000 to 260,000

In the week ending July 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 260,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 2,000 from 256,000 to 254,000. The 4-week moving average was 254,750, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 500 from 249,250 to 248,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.0 percent for the week ending July 23, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 23 was 1,416,000, an increase of 48,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up 9,000 from 1,359,000 to 1,368,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,375,250, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 2,250 from 1,362,000 to 1,364,250.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 205,587 in the week ending July 30, a decrease of 9,825 (or -4.6 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 14,242 (or -6.6 percent) from the previous week. There were 325,715 initial claims in the comparable week in 2021.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.0 percent during the week ending July 23, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,450,213, an increase of 2,943 (or 0.2 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 46,510 (or -3.2 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,930,342.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending July 16 was 1,472,578, a decrease of 3,890 from the previous week. There were 12,964,897 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2021.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending July 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 471 in the week ending July 23, a decrease of 46 from the prior week. There were 381 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 39 from the preceding week.
There were 6,908 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending July 16, a decrease of 276 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,162, a decrease of 133 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 16 were in Puerto Rico (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), California (1.9), Connecticut (1.9), Rhode Island (1.8), New York (1.6), Massachusetts (1.5), Pennsylvania (1.5), Alaska (1.2), Illinois (1.2), and Nevada (1.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 23 were in Kentucky (+1,051), Virginia (+283), New Mexico (+51), the Virgin Islands (+21), and South Dakota (+7), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-7,490), New York (-5,769), South Carolina (-3,170), California (-3,122), and Alabama (-2,125).
