October 2022 New Orders for Durable Goods increased 1.0%, Ex-Trans up 0.5%

New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in October, up seven of the last eight months, increased $2.8 billion or 1.0 percent to $277.4 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.3 percent September increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.8 percent. Transportation equipment, up six of the last seven months, led the increase, $2.0 billion or 2.1 percent to $97.8 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in October, up seventeen of the last eighteen months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $275.4 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent September increase. Machinery, up nineteen of the last twenty months, led the increase, $0.5 billion or 1.3 percent to $38.9 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in October, up twenty-six consecutive months, increased $7.0 billion or 0.6 percent to $1,144.3 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent September increase. Transportation equipment, up twenty of the last twenty-one months, led the increase, $6.9 billion or 1.0 percent to $671.1 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in October, up twenty-one consecutive months, increased $0.9 billion or 0.2 percent to $489.5 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent September increase. Machinery, up twenty-four consecutive months, drove the increase, $0.9 billion or 1.1 percent to $86.6 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in October increased $1.7 billion or 1.9 percent to $91.0 billion. Shipments increased $1.1 billion or 1.3 percent to $83.9 billion. Unfilled orders increased $7.1 billion or 1.1 percent to $652.4 billion. Inventories increased $0.8 billion or 0.4 percent to $215.6 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in October increased $0.5 billion or 3.3 percent to $14.1 billion. Shipments decreased $0.1 billion or 0.5 percent to $14.3 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $186.9 billion. Inventories increased $0.2 billion or 0.7 percent to $22.6 billion.
Revised September Data
Revised seasonally adjusted September figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $551.0 billion (unchanged from $551.0 billion); shipments, $550.8 billion (revised from $550.3 billion); unfilled orders, $1,137.3 billion (revised from $1,137.8 billion) and total inventories, $801.2 billion (revised from $801.6 billion).
