ICSC Chain Store Sales rose 0.8% In May 23 Wk
The International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Retail Chain Store Sales Index rose 0.8% in the week ended Saturday from its level a week before on a seasonally adjusted, comparable-store basis. On a year-on-year basis, retailers saw sales rise 0.5%. The weekly gain was the biggest since the week before Easter.
"The lead-up to the Memorial Day holiday weekend sparked some renewed consumer spending, which lifted the week-over-week pace," said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC chief economist. But year-to-year results are still being impacted by last year's boost from federal stimulus checks.
