ICSC Chain Store Sales Up 0.8% In Apr 11 Wk
The International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Retail Chain Store Sales Index rose 0.8% in the week to April 11 from its level a week before on a seasonally adjusted, comparable-store basis. On a year-on-year basis, retailers saw sales fall 0.4% in the latest week.
"Easter week helped to lift store traffic and sales, but the seasonally adjusted trend seems to have changed little," said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC chief economist. Retailers have been struggling to boost sales amid a steep drop in consumer spending and as customers trade down for discounts.
