October 2021 New Orders for Durable Goods decreased 0.5%, Ex-Trans up 0.5%

New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in October decreased $1.2 billion or 0.5 percent to $260.1 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This decrease, down two consecutive months, followed a 0.4 percent September decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.8 percent. Transportation equipment, down three of the last four months, drove the decrease, 2.0 billion or 2.6 percent to $75.3 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in October, up five of the last six months, increased $4.0 billion or 1.5 percent to $261.5 billion. This followed a 0.6 percent September increase. Transportation equipment, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $2.3 billion or 3.2 percent to $75.3 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in October, up nine consecutive months, increased $3.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $1,249.7 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent September increase. Machinery, up nineteen consecutive months, led the increase, $1.4 billion or 1.2 percent to $113.7 billion.
Inventories Inventories of manufactured durable goods in October, up nine consecutive months, increased $2.8 billion or 0.6 percent to $466.0 billion. This followed a 1.0 percent September increase. Fabricated metal products, up thirteen consecutive months, led the increase, $0.9 billion or 1.4 percent to $61.0 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in October decreased $1.0 billion or 1.2 percent to $83.8 billion. Shipments decreased $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $80.8 billion. Unfilled orders increased $3.0 billion or 0.4 percent to $760.3 billion. Inventories increased $0.8 billion or 0.4 percent to $203.8 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in October decreased $3.0 billion or 20.1 percent to $11.8 billion. Shipments increased $0.2 billion or 2.0 percent to $12.5 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.6 billion or 0.3 percent to $190.0 billion. Inventories increased less than $0.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $21.2 billion.
Revised September Data
Revised seasonally adjusted September figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $517.1 billion (revised from $515.9 billion); shipments, $513.4 billion (revised from $511.5 billion); unfilled orders, $1,246.6 billion (revised from $1,247.3 billion) and total inventories, $757.6 billion (revised from $756.9 billion).
