Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims decrease 5,000 to 232,000

In the week ending August 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 232,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 6,000 from 243,000 to 237,000. The 4-week moving average was 241,500, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 1,500 from 247,000 to 245,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.0 percent for the week ending August 20, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending August 20 was 1,438,000, an increase of 26,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 3,000 from 1,415,000 to 1,412,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,428,500, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 750 from 1,424,750 to 1,424,000.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 176,793 in the week ending August 27, a decrease of 2,492 (or -1.4 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 946 (or 0.5 percent) from the previous week. There were 292,292 initial claims in the comparable week in 2021.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.0 percent during the week ending August 20, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,392,268, a decrease of 22,085 (or -1.6 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 47,992 (or -3.4 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,674,769.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending August 13 was 1,438,128, a decrease of 10,407 from the previous week. There were 12,186,219 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2021.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending August 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 375 in the week ending August 20, a decrease of 4 from the prior week. There were 381 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 19 from the preceding week.
There were 6,649 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending August 13, a decrease of 20 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,374, an increase of 19 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending August 13 were in New Jersey (2.2), Puerto Rico (2.0), Connecticut (1.9), California (1.8), Rhode Island (1.8), New York (1.6), Massachusetts (1.5), Pennsylvania (1.5), Alaska (1.2), Illinois (1.2), Nevada (1.2), and Oregon (1.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 20 were in Arkansas (+451), Illinois (+428), Connecticut (+390), New York (+336), and Rhode Island (+219), while the largest decreases were in California (-2,130), New Jersey (-1,400), Indiana (-1,263), Oklahoma (-1,174), and Michigan (-714).
