New orders for manufactured goods decreased 0.1% in July 2022

Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in July, down following nine consecutive monthly increases, decreased $5.7 billion or 1.0 percent to $548.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 1.8 percent June increase. Shipments, down following sixteen consecutive monthly increases, decreased $4.7 billion or 0.9 percent to $545.5 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent June increase. Unfilled orders, up twenty-three consecutive months, increased $7.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $1,126.7 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent June increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.04, up from 6.03 in June. Inventories, up twenty-three of the last twenty-four months, increased $0.5 billion or 0.1 percent to $802.0 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent June increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.47, up from 1.46 in June.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in July, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.4 billion or 0.1 percent to $273.2 billion, down from the previously published virtually unchanged decrease. This followed a 2.3 percent June increase. Transportation equipment, down following three consecutive monthly increases, drove the decrease, $0.7 billion or 0.7 percent to $92.9 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods decreased $5.3 billion or 1.9 percent to $275.4 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in July, up fourteen of the last fifteen months, increased $0.6 billion or 0.2 percent to $270.1 billion, down from the previously published 0.4 percent increase. This followed a 0.3 percent June increase. Transportation equipment, up nine of the last ten months, drove the increase, $0.9 billion or 1.1 percent to $86.2 billion. Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, down following sixteen consecutive monthly increases, decreased $5.3 billion or 1.9 percent to $275.4 billion. This followed a 1.4 percent June increase. Petroleum and coal products, down following six consecutive monthly increases, led the decrease, $4.7 billion or 6.7 percent to $65.6 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in July, up twenty-three consecutive months, increased $7.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $1,126.7 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.8 percent June increase. Transportation equipment, up seventeen of the last eighteen months, led the increase, $6.7 billion or 1.0 percent to $655.1 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in July, up eighteen consecutive months, increased $1.2 billion or 0.3 percent to $486.4 billion, up from the previously published 0.2 percent increase. This followed a 0.4 percent June increase. Machinery, up twenty-one consecutive months, led the increase, $0.7 billion or 0.8 percent to $83.9 billion. Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, down following six consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.8 billion or 0.2 percent to $315.6 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent June increase. Petroleum and coal products, down two consecutive months, drove the decrease, $2.3 billion or 4.1 percent to $53.3 billion. By stage of fabrication, July materials and supplies increased 0.8 percent in durable goods and decreased 0.8 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process decreased 0.3 percent in durable goods and increased 0.9 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods increased 0.2 percent in durable goods and decreased 0.2 percent in nondurable goods.
