Chicago Purchasing Managers Index Expansion Accelerate
The Chicago Purchasing Managers reported the CHICAGO BUSINESS BAROMETER rose to the highest level since November 2005.
BUSINESS ACTIVITY:
EMPLOYMENT leapt to the highest level in nearly five years;
PRICES PAID expanded at an accelerating rate;
PRODUCTION, NEW ORDERS, and ORDER BACKLOGS continued to strengthen;
BUYING POLICY: MRO SUPPLIES lead-times countered other trends by shortening.
The CHICAGO BUSINESS BAROMETER accelerated in January, signaling the fourth month of expanding economic activity. While each of the seven measures of economic activity improved, one (EMPLOYMENT) crossed the boundary from contraction into expansion and one (INVENTORY) continued to decline, but at a slower rate. While characterizing the Chicago perspective of national economic activity in January, this report also suggests strengthening economic performance through the last quarter of 2010.
