New orders for manufactured goods increased 0.2% in September 2021

Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in September, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $1.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $515.9 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 1.0 percent August increase. Shipments, also up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $3.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $511.5 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent August increase. Unfilled orders, up eight consecutive months, increased $8.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $1,247.3 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent August increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.84, down from 6.85 in August. Inventories, up fifteen of the last sixteen months, increased $6.3 billion or 0.8 percent to $756.9 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent August increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.48, unchanged from August.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in September, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.9 billion or 0.3 percent to $261.4 billion, up from the previously published 0.4 percent decrease. This followed a 1.3 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $1.8 billion or 2.3 percent to $77.7 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased $2.1 billion or 0.8 percent to $254.5 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, up four of the last five months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $257.0 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.5 percent August decrease. Machinery, up eleven of the last twelve months, led the increase, $0.7 billion or 1.8 percent to $37.3 billion. Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $2.1 billion or 0.8 percent to $254.5 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent August increase. Petroleum and coal products, up fifteen of the last sixteen months, led the increase, $1.1 billion or 2.1 percent to $52.3 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up eight consecutive months, increased $8.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $1,247.3 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.9 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, up seven of the last eight months, led the increase, $5.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $825.0 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, up eight consecutive months, increased $4.2 billion or 0.9 percent to $462.9 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.9 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, also up eight consecutive months, led the increase, $1.0 billion or 0.7 percent to $154.6 billion. Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, increased $2.1 billion or 0.7 percent to $294.0 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent August increase. Petroleum and coal products, up ten of the last eleven months, led the increase, $0.7 billion or 1.7 percent to $43.2 billion. By stage of fabrication, September materials and supplies increased 1.5 percent in durable goods and 1.2 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process increased 0.4 percent in durable goods and 0.6 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods increased 0.8 percent in durable goods and 0.5 percent in nondurable goods.
