December 2022 New Orders for Durable Goods increased 5.6%, Ex-Trans down 0.1%

New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in December, up four of the last five months, increased $15.3 billion or 5.6 percent to $286.9 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 1.7 percent November decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.1 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 6.3 percent. Transportation equipment, also up four of the last five months, drove the increase, $15.5 billion or 16.7 percent to $108.1 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in December, up nineteen of the last twenty months, increased $1.4 billion or 0.5 percent to $277.7 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent November increase. Transportation equipment, up fourteen of the last fifteen months, drove the increase, $1.5 billion or 1.7 percent to $93.8 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in December, up twenty-eight consecutive months, increased $14.5 billion or 1.3 percent to $1,158.2 billion. This followed a virtually unchanged November increase. Transportation equipment, up twenty-two of the last twenty-three months, led the increase, $14.3 billion or 2.1 percent to $685.0 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in December, up twenty-three consecutive months, increased $3.5 billion or 0.7 percent to $493.6 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent November increase. Transportation equipment, up two consecutive months, led the increase, $1.7 billion or 1.1 percent to $158.6 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in December increased $16.2 billion or 19.2 percent to $100.6 billion. Shipments increased $0.2 billion or 0.2 percent to $85.2 billion. Unfilled orders increased $15.4 billion or 2.4 percent to $666.1 billion. Inventories increased $3.0 billion or 1.4 percent to $218.9 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in December decreased $0.4 billion or 2.8 percent to $15.0 billion. Shipments increased $0.7 billion or 5.1 percent to $15.0 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.1 billion or virtually unchanged to $188.0 billion. Inventories increased $0.1 billion or 0.3 percent to $23.0 billion.
Revised November Data
Revised seasonally adjusted November figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $542.7 billion (revised from $543.3 billion); shipments, $547.4 billion (revised from $548.6 billion); unfilled orders, $1,143.7 billion (revised from $1,143.1 billion) and total inventories, $804.8 billion (revised from $804.7 billion).
