New Orders for Durable Goods Increased 4.2%, Ex-Trans unch%

New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $9.9 billion or 4.2 percent to $244.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This increase, up four of the last five months, followed a 5.2 percent May increase and was at the highest level since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992. Excluding transportation, new orders increased slightly. Excluding defense, new orders increased 3.0 percent. Transportation equipment, also up four of the last five months, led the increase, $9.9 billion or 12.8 percent to $87.1 billion. This was led by nondefense aircraft and parts, which increased $6.5 billion.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, down two of the last three months, decreased slightly to to $229.8 billion. This followed a 1.3 percent May increase. Machinery, also down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $0.4 billion or 1.2 percent to $34.2 billion. This followed a 1.1 percent May increase.
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up four of the last five months, increased $21.4 billion or 2.1 percent to $1,029.4 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first published on a NAICS basis and followed a 1.1 percent May increase. Transportation equipment, also up four of the last five months, led the increase, $18.0 billion or 2.9 percent to $637.4 billion.
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, up two of the last three months, increased $0.7 billion or 0.2 percent to $378.0 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first published on a NAICS basis, and followed a slight May decrease. Transportation equipment, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, led the increase, $0.6 billion or 0.5 percent to $116.6 billion.
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in June increased $5.4 billion or 6.3 percent to $91.6 billion. Shipments decreased $1.5 billion or 2.0 percent to $74.3 billion. Unfilled orders increased $17.3 billion or 2.9 percent to $605.7 billion. Inventories increased $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $171.0 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in June increased $3.1 billion or 35.2 percent to $12.0 billion. Shipments increased $0.2 billion or 2.0 percent to $9.9 billion. Unfilled orders increased $2.1 billion or 1.2 percent to $169.7 billion. Inventories increased $0.6 billion or 2.7 percent to $23.1 billion.
Revised seasonally adjusted May figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $488.9 billion (revised from $485.0 billion); shipments, $484.1 billion (revised from $483.6 billion); unfilled orders, $1,008.0 billion (revised from $1,004.8 billion); and total inventories, $627.3 billion (revised from $627.8 billion).
