Wholesale Inventories down 0.4% in September 2019

September 2019 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $498.6 billion, virtually unchanged (±0.5 percent)* from the revised August level, but were down 0.6 percent (±0.7 percent)* from the September 2018 level. The July 2019 to August 2019 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of virtually unchanged (±0.4 percent)* to down 0.1 percent (±0.4percent)*.
Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations but not for price changes, were $676.7 billion at the end of September, down 0.4 percent (±0.2 percent) from the revised August level. Total inventories were up 4.8 percent (±1.2 percent) from the revised September 2018 level. The August 2019 to September 2019 percent change was revised from the advance estimate of down 0.3 percent (±0.2 percent) to down 0.4 percent (±0.2 percent).
The September Inventories/Sales Ratio for merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.36. The September 2018 ratio was 1.29.
