ICSC Chain Store Sales Up 0.6% In Apr 4 Wk
The International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Retail Chain Store Sales Index increased 0.6% in the week to April 4 from its level a week before, on a seasonally-adjusted, comparable store basis. On a year-on-year basis, retailers saw sales decline by 0.3% in the latest week.
"Overall sales continued to contract on a year-over-year basis, but showed some modest improvement on a week-over-week basis," said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC chief economist. He added that sales were stronger in dollar stores, but there was a pullback at discount stores. The weekly result Tuesday followed a rise of 1.1% in the prior week and a decline of 0.4% in the week before that.
