Wholesale Inventories up 0.6% in September 2021

September 2021 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $603.1 billion, up 1.1 percent (±0.5 percent) from the revised August level and were up 22.0 percent (±1.8 percent) from the revised September 2020 level. The July 2021 to August 2021 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of down 1.1 percent (±0.5 percent) to down 0.9 percent (±0.5 percent).
Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were $742.2 billion at the end of September, up 1.4 percent (±0.4 percent) from the revised August level. Total inventories were up 13.1 percent (±1.2 percent) from the revised September 2020 level. The August 2021 to September 2021 percent change was revised from the advance estimate of up 1.1 percent (±0.4 percent) to up 1.4 percent (±0.4 percent).
The September Inventories/Sales Ratio for merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.23. The September 2020 ratio was 1.33.
