ICSC Chain Store Sales jumped by 2.4% in Feb 2 Wk

The ICSC‐Goldman Sachs (ICSC‐GS) chain store sales index for the week ending February 2, 2013 jumped by 2.4% from the prior week and on a year‐over‐year basis improved a notch to 2.6%. The ICSC‐GS consumer tracking survey found that business was stronger over the past week for specialty stores, wholesale clubs, dollar stores and apparel stores, in particular, and steady on a year‐over‐year basis for most other segments.
According to Weather Trends, Inc. (WTI) the U.S. average nationwide temperature was 2.9°F colder than last year, but 4.1°F above normal over its long‐term trend. WTI observed that the past week was a “week of extremes as temperatures swung wildly from frigid Arctic conditions to early spring and back into the deep freeze by weekend.”
Meanwhile, gasoline prices popped up over the past week. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. average price of a gallon of regular grade gasoline was $3.538 on February 4, 2013‐‐up 18.1 cents from the prior week. Monthly reporting firms will report their sales on Thursday, March 7.
