September 2021 New Orders for Durable Goods decreased 0.4%, Ex-Trans up 0.4%

New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in September decreased $1.0 billion or 0.4 percent to $261.3 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This decrease, down following four consecutive monthly increases, followed a 1.3 percent August increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.4 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 2.0 percent. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $1.8 billion or 2.3 percent to $77.7 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, up four of the last five months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $257.0 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent August decrease. Machinery, up eleven of the last twelve months, led the increase, $0.6 billion or 1.7 percent to $37.3 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up eight consecutive months, increased $8.8 billion or 0.7 percent to $1,247.1 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, up seven of the last eight months, led the increase, $5.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $825.0 billion.
Inventories Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, up eight consecutive months, increased $4.0 billion or 0.9 percent to $462.7 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, also up eight consecutive months, led the increase, $1.0 billion or 0.7 percent to $154.6 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in September decreased $3.7 billion or 4.2 percent to $84.9 billion. Shipments increased $1.5 billion or 1.9 percent to $81.0 billion. Unfilled orders increased $3.9 billion or 0.5 percent to $757.4 billion. Inventories increased $1.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $202.7 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in September increased $3.3 billion or 28.4 percent to $15.0 billion. Shipments decreased $0.1 billion or 0.9 percent to $12.2 billion. Unfilled orders increased $2.8 billion or 1.5 percent to $190.8 billion. Inventories increased $0.1 billion or 0.3 percent to $21.1 billion.
Revised August Data
Revised seasonally adjusted August figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $514.6 billion (revised from $515.7 billion); shipments, $508.3 billion (unchanged); unfilled orders, $1,238.3 billion (revised from $1,239.4 billion) and total inventories, $750.7 billion (revised from $749.3 billion).
