Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims increase 9,000 to 224,000

In the week ending January 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 224,000, an increase of
9,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 214,000 to
215,000. The 4-week moving average was 207,750, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average. The
previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 202,250 to 202,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3 percent for the week ending January 20, an
increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending January 20 was 1,898,000, an increase of 70,000 from the previous
week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 5,000 from 1,833,000 to 1,828,000. The 4-week
moving average was 1,841,250, an increase of 7,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's
average was revised down by 1,250 from 1,835,000 to 1,833,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 261,029 in the week ending
January 27, an increase of 11,082 (or 4.4 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected no change
in the unadjusted data from the previous week. There were 225,026 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending January 20, an increase of
0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs
totaled 2,187,036, an increase of 133,750 (or 6.5 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an
increase of 53,023 (or 2.6 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.3 percent and the volume was
1,911,203.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending January 13 was 2,080,990,
a decrease of 67,159 from the previous week. There were 1,890,290 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in
the comparable week in 2023.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending January 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 420 in the week ending January 20, a
decrease of 342 from the prior week. There were 357 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 58
from the preceding week.
There were 6,708 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending January 13, a
decrease of 58 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,186, a decrease of 340
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending January 13 were in New Jersey (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6),
Minnesota (2.4), Massachusetts (2.3), Alaska (2.2), California (2.2), Illinois (2.2), Montana (2.1), Puerto Rico (2.1),
Pennsylvania (2.0), and Washington (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending January 20 were in Wisconsin (+1,048) and Washington
(+428), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-5,636), California (-4,632), New York (-4,208), Georgia (-3,477),
and Oregon (-2,388).
