Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims decrease 20,000 to 201,000

In the week ending September 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 201,000, a decrease of
20,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 220,000 to
221,000. The 4-week moving average was 217,000, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week's revised average. The
previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 224,500 to 224,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent for the week ending September 9,
unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending September 9 was 1,662,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week's
revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 5,000 from 1,688,000 to 1,683,000. The 4-week moving
average was 1,687,000, a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was
revised down by 1,250 from 1,697,000 to 1,695,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 175,661 in the week ending
September 16, an increase of 67 (or 0.04 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase
of 17,936 (or 10.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 168,701 initial claims in the comparable week in 2022.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent during the week ending September 9, unchanged
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,650,763, a
decrease of 5,087 (or -0.3 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 15,145 (or
0.9 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 0.9 percent and the volume was 1,278,853.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending September 2 was
1,678,881, a decrease of 93,267 from the previous week. There were 1,295,610 weekly claims filed for benefits in all
programs in the comparable week in 2022.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending September 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 272 in the week ending September 9, a
decrease of 42 from the prior week. There were 319 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 35
from the preceding week.
There were 4,164 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending September 2, a
decrease of 388 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 3,881, a decrease of 56
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 2 were in New Jersey (2.5), Hawaii (2.3),
California (2.0), New York (1.9), Puerto Rico (1.9), Rhode Island (1.8), Massachusetts (1.7), Oregon (1.6), and
Pennsylvania (1.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending September 9 were in Indiana (+2,627), Florida (+783),
Kentucky (+308), Nebraska (+273), and Iowa (+162), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-3,425), Missouri
(-3,196), New York (-3,051), California (-1,880), and Texas (-1,393).
