Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims decrease 16,000 to 187,000

In the week ending January 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 187,000, a decrease of
16,000 from the previous week's revised level. This is the lowest level for initial claims since September 24, 2022 when
it was 182,000. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 202,000 to 203,000. The 4-week moving
average was 203,250, a decrease of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was
revised up by 250 from 207,750 to 208,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending January 6,
unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending January 6 was 1,806,000, a decrease of 26,000 from the previous week's revised
level. The previous week's level was revised down by 2,000 from 1,834,000 to 1,832,000. The 4-week moving average
was 1,848,000, a decrease of 13,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised
down by 500 from 1,862,250 to 1,861,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 289,228 in the week ending
January 13, a decrease of 29,543 (or -9.3 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease
of 5,681 (or -1.8 percent) from the previous week. There were 288,330 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending January 6, unchanged from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 2,121,820, an increase
of 18,454 (or 0.9 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 49,469 (or 2.4
percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.3 percent and the volume was 1,908,639.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending December 30 was
2,129,892, an increase of 202,122 from the previous week. There were 1,893,809 weekly claims filed for benefits in all
programs in the comparable week in 2022.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending December 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 637 in the week ending January 6, an
increase of 222 from the prior week. There were 368 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 138
from the preceding week.
There were 6,595 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending December 30, an
increase of 311 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,096, a decrease of 92
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending December 30 were in New Jersey (2.8), Rhode Island (2.8),
Minnesota (2.6), Montana (2.5), Alaska (2.3), California (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.2), New York (2.1),
and Washington (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending January 6 were in New York (+20,535), California (+9,454),
Texas (+9,337), Georgia (+6,261), and South Carolina (+4,152), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-4,044),
Massachusetts (-3,341), Connecticut (-2,896), Iowa (-1,847), and Pennsylvania (-1,566).
