Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims decrease 9,000 to 228,000

In the week ending July 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 228,000, a decrease of 9,000
from the previous week's unrevised level of 237,000. The 4-week moving average was 237,500, a decrease of 9,250 from
the previous week's unrevised average of 246,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending July 8, unchanged
from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the
week ending July 8 was 1,754,000, an increase of 33,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's
level was revised down by 8,000 from 1,729,000 to 1,721,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,731,500, a decrease of
1,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 2,000 from 1,735,250
to 1,733,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 257,976 in the week ending July
15, a decrease of 326 (or -0.1 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 9,953
(or 3.9 percent) from the previous week. There were 237,092 initial claims in the comparable week in 2022.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3 percent during the week ending July 8, an increase of 0.1
percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled
1,892,799, an increase of 168,296 (or 9.8 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an
increase of 132,522 (or 7.7 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.0 percent and the volume was
1,450,142.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending July 1 was 1,748,212, a
decrease of 15,800 from the previous week. There were 1,351,663 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the
comparable week in 2022.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending July 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 405 in the week ending July 8, a decrease
of 2 from the prior week. There were 358 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 12 from the
preceding week.
There were 4,739 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending July 1, a
decrease of 17 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 3,861, a decrease of 106
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 1 were in Puerto Rico (2.4), New Jersey (2.3),
California (2.1), Connecticut (2.0), Rhode Island (2.0), Massachusetts (1.9), New York (1.8), Oregon (1.7), Minnesota
(1.6), and Pennsylvania (1.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 8 were in New York (+8,043), Ohio (+1,783),
Pennsylvania (+1,413), Iowa (+1,368), and Arizona (+1,118), while the largest decreases were in Connecticut (-3,538),
New Jersey (-3,290), Michigan (-1,434), Minnesota (-758), and Rhode Island (-751).
