September 2023 New Orders for Durable Goods increased 4.7%, Ex-Trans up 0.5%

New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $13.2 billion or 4.7 percent to $297.2 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.1 percent August decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 5.8 percent. Transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $12.3 billion or 12.7 percent to $109.2 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, down two of the last three months, decreased $0.8 billion or 0.3 percent to $283.7 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, down three of the last four months, drove the decrease, $1.0 billion or 1.1 percent to $91.4 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up nine of the last ten months, increased $18.5 billion or 1.4 percent to $1,353.8 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, also up nine of the last ten months, led the increase, $17.8 billion or 2.1 percent to $855.7 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, up two consecutive months, increased $0.5 billion or 0.1 percent to $523.7 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent August increase. Machinery, up thirty-four of the last thirty-five months, led the increase, $0.3 billion or 0.3 percent to $95.1 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in September increased $16.0 billion or 18.6 percent to $101.9 billion. Shipments decreased $0.2 billion or 0.2 percent to $83.1 billion. Unfilled orders increased $18.8 billion or 2.4 percent to $799.3 billion. Inventories increased $0.6 billion or 0.3 percent to $226.7 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in September decreased $2.1 billion or 14.4 percent to $12.3 billion. Shipments decreased less than $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $13.6 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $1.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $210.2 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $24.2 billion.
Revised August Data
Revised seasonally adjusted August figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $585.5 billion (revised from $586.1 billion); shipments, $586.0 billion (unchanged); unfilled orders, $1,335.3 billion (revised from $1,335.9 billion) and total inventories, $855.3 billion (revised from $855.4 billion).
