Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims increase 2,000 to 204,000

In the week ending September 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 204,000, an increase of
2,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 201,000 to
202,000. The 4-week moving average was 211,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average. The
previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 217,000 to 217,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent for the week ending September 16,
unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending September 16 was 1,670,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's
revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 4,000 from 1,662,000 to 1,658,000. The 4-week moving
average was 1,673,750, a decrease of 12,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was
revised down by 1,000 from 1,687,000 to 1,686,000.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 174,590 in the week ending
September 23, a decrease of 1,996 (or -1.1 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a
decrease of 3,839 (or -2.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 153,821 initial claims in the comparable week in
2022.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1 percent during the week ending September 16, unchanged
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,592,819, a
decrease of 53,098 (or -3.2 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 64,643 (or
-3.9 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 0.9 percent and the volume was 1,224,496.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending September 9 was
1,669,542, a decrease of 9,347 from the previous week. There were 1,302,447 weekly claims filed for benefits in all
programs in the comparable week in 2022.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending September 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 363 in the week ending September 16, an
increase of 91 from the prior week. There were 362 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 43
from the preceding week.
There were 4,295 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending September 9, an
increase of 131 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,175, an increase of 294
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 9 were in Hawaii (2.5), New Jersey (2.3),
California (2.1), New York (1.8), Puerto Rico (1.8), Massachusetts (1.6), Rhode Island (1.6), Nevada (1.5), Oregon (1.5),
and Washington (1.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending September 16 were in Georgia (+1,539), New York (+1,332),
South Carolina (+1,103), Texas (+987), and Oregon (+557), while the largest decreases were in Indiana (-2,761),
California (-1,498), Virginia (-631), Iowa (-558), and Kentucky (-375)
