Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims Increase 9,000 to 221,000

In the week ending March 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 221,000, an increase of 9,000
from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 2,000 from 210,000 to 212,000. The
4-week moving average was 214,250, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous
week's average was revised up by 500 from 211,000 to 211,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending March 23,
unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 23 was 1,791,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's revised
level. The previous week's level was revised down by 9,000 from 1,819,000 to 1,810,000. The 4-week moving average
was 1,799,750, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised
down by 2,250 from 1,802,750 to 1,800,500.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 196,376 in the week ending March
30, an increase of 2,455 (or 1.3 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 5,304
(or -2.7 percent) from the previous week. There were 195,200 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3 percent during the week ending March 23, unchanged from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,939,150, a decrease
of 73,454 (or -3.6 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 52,487 (or -2.6
percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.3 percent and the volume was 1,841,752.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending March 16 was 2,038,116,
an increase of 1,035 from the previous week. There were 1,905,338 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in
the comparable week in 2023
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending March 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 371 in the week ending March 23, an
increase of 9 from the prior week. There were 368 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 11
from the preceding week.
There were 5,891 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending March 16, a
decrease of 350 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,439, an increase of 34
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 16 were in New Jersey (2.8), California (2.5), Rhode
Island (2.5), Massachusetts (2.3), Minnesota (2.3), Illinois (2.1), New York (1.9), Alaska (1.8), Connecticut (1.8),
Montana (1.8), Pennsylvania (1.8), and Washington (1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 23 were in Texas (+2,274), Missouri (+1,312), Oregon
(+940), Illinois (+788), and Ohio (+785), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-1,322), California (-538),
Mississippi (-443), Connecticut (-440), and Iowa (-423).
